April 25th was my first chase day of the season and looked like a decent day before the day. SPC had outlined a 10% tornado risk in Northwest Kansas. A low was forecast to deepen in southeast Colorado and models were forecasting a 992mb low. This would help transport mid-50°F dewpoints into the low and push MLCAPE values up to 1500 J/Kg.

SPC Day 1 13z Tornado Probabilities

With SPC outlining the 10% risk along and east of the K-27 corridor south of Goodland, this presented a good opportunity close to home. Looking at the available data, it appeared that Colby would be a good place to head to. I left Grand Island a bit after 14z and arrived in Colby right around 18z. SPC issued a mesoscale discussion for the tri-state region around 1930z and a tornado watch was issued shortly thereafter.

A cumulus field began developing south of the warm front as the low deepened. I moved from Colby to the northwest to get in position as initiation was imminent. Shortly after 20z, storms began to fire and the first storm that looked good was developing over Burlington.

I headed west of Goodland to begin the intercept and right around 21z I got on the storm and was able to see it spin up a little gustnado on the leading edge.

I tracked this storm between Goodland and Bird City where it got organized with a nice lowering and meso and shortly after it went tornado warned.

This was the best structure that the storm had and as it continued progressing to the northeast the RFD became rain loaded as the precipitation wrapped around and obscured portions of the storm.

I tracked the storm for a little bit longer until I got back to Atwood where I observed various storms on radar around me, none of which looked particularly interesting and as this storm pulled away to the north and began to weaken I decided to call the chase and begin the trek home.
