A weak low pressure was forecast to translate from Colorado into Nebraska, along with it a warm front stretching across southern Nebraska and a trailing cold front south through Colorado. Dewpoints in the low 60°F’s south of the front with cool temperatures aloft set the stage for moderate instability as MLCAPE values would climb near 2,000 J/Kg. Any backing along the front would amplify the tornado chances.

SPC 13z Day 1 tornado outlook

SPC had a 2% area outlines in Central Nebraska for tornadoes. I wasn’t planning on chasing this day but as 16z rolled around and cells started firing near North Platte, I decided to head out and meet them anyway. The storm was riding along Interstate 80 and southeast of Lexington when it became tornado warned.

Eventually, I got on the storm around 19z near Minden and it had a fresh tornado warning on it and visibly a wall cloud.

The storm got organized really quick and the structure took on a more well defined look to it but there was a lot of precip in there so if there was a tornado in there, it wasn’t visible from my vantage point.

As I tracked the storm east, the tornado warning dropped, yet the storm still exhibited a bowl shaped lowering below the wall cloud that looked suspicious at times, but no additional reports occurred.

This cell I had been tracking for a while sort of took a left turn and started to weaken so I dropped back west to the stronger complex of cells approaching Minden.

This cluster of storms caught up to the earlier cell I was tracking near Hastings and it went tornado warned again. I tracked it to Harvard before it started growing upscale into a line and I called the chase and started back home.
